We first went to this area when our dog walker accidentally let Pequi’s lead slip, and she bolted. It took us over two hours to find her again! But that is a story for another post. This post is about a lovely, short Sunday dog walk from East Hagbourne to Upton.

East Hagbourne is a village situated 1 mile from Didcot, and the last census recorded the population at just over 1,800 people. The area is mostly farmland, and you can walk over the old Didcot railway tracks.

The Hike

We started our walk at the East Hagbourne Village Hall car park (Postcode: OX11 9LR). From there, we turned right on Main Road and walked on the side of the road towards an old railway bridge. Be careful with the traffic in this section of the walk as there is not much space to walk there.

quick walk from the car park to the start of the track trail

From the old railway bridge, we went up the stairs, where we found a dog waste bin (the only other one will be at the end of the trail). We then turned left and followed the path until the end, where we got to Upton arriving at Chapel Furlong Road. In this section, you can see a pretty farm landscape with cattle grazing around. 🙂

As the path is pedestrian, there were local families with children picking apples and berries on the sides of the path. I’m saying ‘local’, as they all had a bucket or a basket at hand.

In Upton, we turned right at Fieldside Road and walked through the back streets, passing pretty converted barns and St. Mary The Virgin Church.

We then walked on corn fields following the footpath towards East Hagbourne. In this section, we could see the old railway track in the distance.

Back in East HagBourne we ended up at Church Close, walked through the church footpath and turned right towards the car park.

The girls were fired up by the farm and animal smells in the air and definitely enjoyed the walk. It must be a beautiful landscape another time of the year when the corn is green and tall and we intend to come back and check next year!

In terms of waymarks, there aren’t any but you will find at least signs for the public footpath and what is not for public access, which helps a lot.

If you walk in that area, what other beautiful walks are there around East Hagbourne and Upton? Leave a comment below.
