This is my first book review on the blog, and I think I picked a great first one!
Every day people bring dogs into their homes. Whether it is a new puppy bought from a breeder or a dog adopted from a shelter, millions of dogs are included as new additions to families across the UK.
The Book Your Dog Wishes You Would Read mainly addresses, but not only, the phase where we anticipate, choose and bring a new dog home.
The author, Louise Glazebrook is one of the UK’s leading dog behaviourists and trainers. She has worked with dogs from London Council pound kennels to working farm dogs and street dogs of India, and it shows.
She specialises in teaching people how to understand and connect with their dogs.
The book is divided into three parts: understanding your dog, bringing the right dog home, and what your dog wants you to know. The author delivers a compelling level of information that I wish everyone considering getting a dog for the first time in their lives would read.
If you are into listening to audiobooks, the Audible version is excellent and listening to it narrated by the author makes it even more impactful.
Note: you can find the book on Amazon using this link
In plain English, the book helps to understand topics about dog behaviour very quickly and unpack subjects like choosing a breed based on their traits, selecting a breeder and preparing for the new arrival at home. This part of the book is reasonably detailed, balancing the amount of information with practical, actionable advice.
On the behaviour side of things, the author explains her traffic light system of signs your dog might be giving you in many situations. This should bring something new even for seasoned and experienced dog owners.
The last part of the book: What your dog wants you to know, covers many topics, from chewing and body language up to the dog’s old age and end of life.
I only wish some of the subjects in the last part were more in-depth, as I felt this part is less actionable, but I accept that each topic could be material for one entire book.
Are you looking to get a dog?
If so, you’re probably asking yourself: What breed of dog should I get? What dog would suit my lifestyle best? What to ask the breeder? What to ask at the rescue centre? How to welcome my dog home? How to play with my puppy? How to help my puppy to develop in a well-rounded dog? What food is best for my dog?
Are you for advice on an elderly dog?
Then you’re probably asking yourself: How to help my dog to live a better life? When to say goodbye to my dog? HOW to say goodbye to my dog?
She covers all these questions and more. I listened to her book via Audible during my morning walks with Gambá and Pequi. And every morning I would listen and think – Oh!
Finally, I think it is a great book, and I recommend it to new and old owners alike.
As you might know by now if you have read some of our content, Gambá was brought home from a breeder and Pequi was rescued in Portugal. For both cases, this book has interesting information to offer. You can check our girls in this post.
Cheers,
Ademar
